Taustaa
Olen ”kolkyt ja risat” savonlinnalainen toimittaja sekä ”kirjallisuuden sekatyöläinen”. Koulutukseltani olen filosofian maisteri, opiskelin Tampereen yliopistossa vuosina 1999-2006. Pääaineenani oli yleinen kirjallisuustiede. Pitkinä sivuaineina opiskelin kansainvälistä politiikkaa, suomen kieltä ja audiovisuaalista mediakulttuuria. Lyhyitä sivuaineitakin kerkesi kertyä muutama, suoritin mm. sosiologian, yleisen historian, hallintotieteen ja suomen kirjallisuuden perusopinnot, ja kävin eri kielten luennoilla. Valmistuin tammikuussa 2006.
Kirjoitin pro-gradu -tutkielmani Alasdair Gray’n vuonna 1981 ilmestyneestä romaanista Lanark – A life in four books. Tutkielma käsittelee metafiktiivista, ja sitä kautta postmodernia kirjallisuutta.
Kirjallisuuskritiikkejä olen kirjoittanut syksystä 2003 lähtien. Aloitin kirjoittamalla Uuden Naisen Kirjakahvilaan, ja jossakin vaiheessa minut hyväksyttiin myös Suomen Nuorisokirjallisuuden Instituutin julkaiseman Onnimanni -lehden kirjoittajaksi. Onnimanni oli minulle onnenpotku, koska lasten ja nuorten kirjallisuus on hyvin lähellä sydäntäni. Olenkin kirjoittanut Onnimanniin säännöllisesti siitä lähtien kun ensimmäinen tekstini lehdessä julkaistiin.
Kritiikkejä, kirja-arvioita ja sekalaisia lehti- sekä kirjallisuusalan töitä on tullut kirjoitettua/tehtyä myös muualle. Toimitin Uuden Naisen Kirjakahvilaa syksyyn 2008 asti (muistaakseni keväästä 2005 lähtien). Tämän lisäksi kirjoittelin aikanaan kritiikkejä suhteellisen säännöllisesti kirjallisuus- ja kulttuurilehti Kirjoon, ja muutaman jutun myös Suomen Dekkariseuran julkaisuun Ruumiin Kulttuuri. Kirjoitin myös lasten ja nuorten fantasia- ja tieteiskirjallisuutta koskevia lausuntoja usean vuoden ajan Kustannusosakeyhtiö Otavalle: lausunnonantajan päätyö on arvioida onko kyseisessä käsikirjoituksessa julkaisupotentiaalia vaiko ei – ikävä kyllä on sanottava, että useimmissa käsikirjoituksissa julkaisupotentiaalia ei ollut, taso ei ollut kovin korkea. Kirjoitin lausunnot ulkomaisesta fantasia- ja tieteiskirjallisuudesta.
Asun Savonlinnassa, palasin takaisin kotiin kesällä 2008. Tein reilun puoli vuotta töitä alulehti Savonmaalle freelance-toimittajana, kriitikon töiden ohessa. Keväästä 2009 vuodenvaihteeseen 2010 tein töitä Savonlinnan Innovaatiokeskukselle, jossa toimin viestintävastaavana, virallisesti tuottajan tittelillä. Työni sisältö oli tuottaa sitä sisältöä jota kulloinkin tarvitaan: pääasiassa kirjallista, mutta tarpeen vaatiessa myös audiovisuaalista sisältöä. Keväällä 2008 tuotin Suomen Lontoon suurlähetystössä pidettyyn kansainväliseen investointitapahtumaan Järvi-Suomen, eli Lakeland -alueen esittelyvideon. Juoksin kasaan esityksessä tarvittavan ääni- ja kuvamateriaalin, josta muokkasin yhtenäisen ja toimivan audiovisuaalisen koosteen editointiohjelmalla – yhteistyössä loistavan tiimin kanssa. Tällä hetkellä työskentelen edelleen avustajana Suomen Lastenkirjainstituutin Onnimanni -lehdelle, ja kirjoitan kritiikkejä myös Savon Sanomiin, Sylviin sekä mahdollisuuksien mukaan muille tahoille. Pieniin kulttuurilehtiin en enää kirjoita, koska aikani ei siihen riitä. Onnimanni on poikkeus, koska lehti on suuntautunut nimenomaan lasten- ja nuortenkirjallisuuteen. Teen myös muita töitä, sillä yleisesti tunnettu tosiasiahan on se, että kirjallisuuskritiikeillä ei elä. Enkä haluaisikaan elää – jos elämässä ei ole muuta kuin kirjallisuuskritiikit ja niiden tekeminen, silloin kyllä pitää muuttaa elämän suuntaa ja pian. Kaikenlaisia virikkeitä sekä mielellään myös aivan muita töitä pitää olla, jotta jaksaa kritiikkien kanssa työskennellä.
Henkilökohtaista:
Lukeminen on ollut ja tulee näillä näkymin olemaankin elinikäinen projekti. Opin lapsena muistamaan minulle luetut tarinat ulkoa, ja jonkin aikaa sujuvasti narrasin äitiäni että osaan muka lukea, vaikka en oikeasti osannutkaan. Jäin kiinni aika nopeasti. 😉
Olen lukenut spekulatiivista fiktiota (eli mm. fantasia- ja tieteiskirjallisuutta) lapsesta saakka, ja ne ovat edelleen hyvin lähellä sydäntäni. Jos aikaa jää, luen mielelläni ihan kaikkea, mm. historiallisia kertomuksia, dekkareita, tietokirjoja, sarjakuvia ja itseasiassa ihan mitä tahansa mikä kiinnostaa. Joskus on kausia jolloin en lue juuri mitään, mutta ne eivät yleensä kestä kovin pitkään.
Lukemisen lisäksi pidän paljon elokuvista. En juurikaan katso televisiota, mutta elokuvien visuaalinen maailma jaksaa kiehtoa – etenkin pimeinä syys- ja talvi-iltoina. Pitkästä aikaa vuosiin yksi ainoa tv-sarja on kiehtonut myös: Scifi-kanavan lippulaiva Battlestar Galactica. Sarjassa kiinnostaa etenkin sen sosiologinen ulottuvuus sekä se, kuinka voimakkaasti sarja on muuttanut tieteisgenreä etenkin kerronnallisella tasolla.
Jos lähtisin tekemään väitöskirjaa, luulen että valitsisin aiheen kirjallisuuden sosiologian parista: yhteiskuntatieteet ovat kiehtoneet minua aina, mikä on yksi syy miksi päädyin opiskelemaan yleistä kirjallisuustiedettä – oppiaine on aihepiiriltään hyvin laaja, se pitää sisällään oikeastaan kaikki elämän osa-alueet.
Muita elämän mittaisia projekteja ovat puutarhanhoito ja luonnossa liikkuminen. Viihdyn erinomaisen hyvin luonnon helmassa marja- ja sienimetsissä sekä ”kukkapenkissä nokallani”, eli kukkapenkkiä nenä maassa kitkien. Kesäisin vietän vapaa-aikani lähes kokonaan ulkona oleskellen jos vain mahdollista.
Olen erittäin eläinrakas. Perheeseemme kuului 19-vuoden ajan muuan kissaneiti nimeltä Neiti Nenä, ja hänen kanssaan yhtä aikaa myös eräs Herra Koira nimeltä Jasper. Neiti Nenä ja Herra Jasper olivat hyviä ystäviä 16-vuoden ajan, kunnes Herra Jasper nukkui pois. Neiti Nenä nukkui pois syksyllä 2010, nukahti pitkän väsymyksen jälkeen viereeni. Oli hienoa että saimme päättää yhteisen taipaleen yhdessä, ja luonnollisella tavalla. Koska eläinrakas olen, joulukuussa 2010 kävin hakemassa Pohjois-Karjalan Tuupovaaraan Öllölän kylältä, Kissojen alkukoti ja apu ry:sta pentukissan. Joku oli syyskuussa 2010 jättänyt emon ja kolme pentua 6-tien varteen. Sieltä pesue toimitettiin yhdistykselle. Nähtyäni aran pennun ja hänen emonsa totesin että molemmat lähtevät mukaan, mutta koska mukanani oli vain yksi kuljetuslaatikko, hain emon viikon päästä. Vietimme joulua 2010 uusperheen kanssa mökillä kaikessa rauhassa toisiimme tutustellen.
Pentu kotiutui hienosti, mutta hänen emonsa ei. Emo lähti omille retkilleen puolen vuoden yhteisasumisen jälkeen erään ulkoilureissun yhteydessä. Koska mökkiseudullamme on paljon ilveksiä, joiden suuhun mm. usea kissa on naapuristamme päätynyt, vedimme omat johtopäätöksemme siitä kun emo ei enää palannut kotiin. Pentu on voi hyvin ja on kasvanut kauniiksi kissaneidiksi. Hän sai syksyllä 2012 kaverin, kun uusi kissanpentu löysi tiensä luoksemme. Nyt meitä on taas kolme.

*Koira. Kaukasianpaimenkoira tai Rotweiler. Ja sitten kun kissa-mummosta aika jättää, ainakin kolme kissaa. (Kissamummosta jätti aika syyskuussa 2010. Joulukuussa 2010 tuli kaksi kissaa. Joista toinen katosi sittemmin. Kolmas kissa saapui syksyllä 2012.)
*Oma puinen ja tervattu soutuvene. Saada istua joka kesä ainakin yksi yö ongella jossakin Saimaan saaren kupeessa. Nimenomaan kesäkuisena yönä. Jos vielä sattuisi satamaan lempeän hiljaista tihkusadetta, yö olisi täydellinen. Saimaa on sateella kauneimmillaan.
*Jos joskus onnistuisin kasvattamaan yhden jalokärhön siten, että se selviäisi myös Itä-Suomen talvista, se olisi aikamoinen juttu.
Mitäpä sitä ihminen enempää elämältä voisi pyytää. 😉

This blog is mainly and mostly about children’s literature and about literary criticism. In Finnish we say ”children’s and young people’s literature”, meaning literature written for both young children and teenagers. And yes, literary criticism also goes hand in hand with children’s (and young people’s) literature. Read Farah Mendlesohn if you don’t believe me.
The name of the blog – Alas taikavirtaa – comes from Eduard Uspenski, or Eduard Uspensky, a russian writer, who’s written this magnificent book called Alas taikavirtaa. Roughly translated it means ”Down the magic stream”. It’s a story of a small boy somewhere in the Russian countryside who’s sent out to his aunt and about all the magical experiences he has during the visit. Eduard Uspenski was and still is know as sort of a rebel who put in his books quite a lot of criticism about the former Soviet society. Uspenski is also a very humoristic writer – he has the ability, or talent, to write so that the reader is laughing his/her head off, and also so that the reader gets a feeling that despite all the difficulties we endure in our daily lives life is still worth living for. Because every day can be a possible trip down the magic stream. You never know what lies ahead.
About me. I’m little over 30 years old journalist/literary critic from Finland. I studied Comparative Literature at the University of Tampere in 1999-2006. My other (major) subjects were Media Culture, Finnish Language and International Relations. I also had several minors, including Finnish History and General History, Sociology and Administrative Science. I wrote my MA thesis about Alasdair Gray’s Lanark (the link open’s up as a .pdf -file). Gray is a Scottish writer and Lanark is definitely one of the strangest books I’ve ever read. Its structure and storylines are fascinating. And very postmodern. = Very interesting piece of postmodern literature. I became interested of Lanark when I spent a year in Iceland studying at the University of Iceland. There I attended a course of Scottish Literature. The course itself was boring (because of the teacher) but Lanark was something I was happy to make an acquaintance. So three years later I finished my thesis about Lanark.
I write reviews and critique’s about the children’s (and young people’s) literature published in Finland. I’ve also been writing reviews for some Finnish publishing companies about the foreign fantasy and science fiction literature – recommending what they should translate in Finnish and what not. Mostly what not. There’s just so much ”what not” in the market fair nowadays which is sad. In the past I’ve also been writing for various small magazines, mostly reviews and criticism but also other stuff sometimes.
From spring 2009 till the beginning of 2010 I worked as a producer in Savonlinna Innovation Centre. For me being a producer included almost all the areas of communication one can imagine: I produced texts and was involved in different kinds of communicational processes. In the spring 2009 I produced my first audiovisual presentation: I edited a ”film” for an international investor event held in the Finnish London Embassy in April 2009. The audiovisual presentation, Lakeland presentation, is a combination of moving picture and still pictures and music chosed by me and my dear colleague Kiti Häkkinen. My job was to produce the whole 3.20 minute piece from beginning to the end, including the part of ”finding the proper material” for the presentation. It was quite an operation, to say the least, because the producing schedule was very tight. But I managed – thank’s to our glorius team in the Innovation Centre. Producing is something one cannot do by him or herself and I considered (and still consider) myself very lucky to be part of this wonderful team for this period of time in my life!
I moved back home to Savonlinna in the summer 2008. In the winter 2008-2009 I worked for a small newspaper in the region. I wanted to move back home because this region is my one true home. My family comes from the region – which is without doubt one of the most beautiful archipelago regions in the world. For the winter 2008-2009 I lived in the countryside in an old house where my great great parents used to live and work as farmers. I could never have imagined that I someday would have the chance to live there – with our 17 years old cat (at the time, now she is 18 years old!), The Lady of the House. So there we were, living in this small house, outside the city of Savonlinna, in the middle of the forest. With about 2 meters of snow in all over the place during winter time. And without running water and with an old fashioned outhouse toilet (!). I got my water from a well and of course we do have a sauna, which compensates for all the lacks of ”modern inventions” (a bathroom, a shower etc.). And yes, I did have electricity and (mobile) internet connection. And company: a large male bear called Topi visits our surroundings regularly in the summertime and sleeps somewhere in the forest during the winter time. Hee. I don’t think I’ve ever been happier in my whole life. 😉 I lived the for almost a year, till I got a nice and cozy apartment from the city of Savonlinna.
Me being a producer included also a dream: my dream is called ”faith manages”. I have always been and always will be a science fiction fan. Faith manages is a line, which was uttered aloud in the last episode of season 4 of the scifi series Babylon 5. Babylon 5 was Michael J. Straczynski’s dream, and he managed it, even though all the odds seemed to be against to the making of the series. Somehow this seems to be ”a normal pattern” to what comes to producing different kinds of scifi series, books or cartoons: There is always someone or more like ”many someones” telling how it’s totally impossible to do this, how the whole thing is total crap and how it’s never gonna work. Then someone just goes and does it and usually this also involves making a lot of money. Most importanty the makers have manages to prove that there are A LOT of people around the world who ”love this weird scifi stuff” and these people form communities – people and communities who have a lot of faith to the issue at hand.
The line ”faith manages” went hand in hand with the beginning of my ”career as a producer”. It started by learnig all by myself how to use different kinds of editing programs. At that point I lived in different city totally different kind of life and I had absolutely no idea what would be ahead. I had no idea I would someday move to Savonlinna and be involved in different projects and producing an audiovisual piece myself. I had no idea. And still I just kept on pushing it, trying to learn how the editing program works and solving computer problems that came with the program.
Why? Because of Battlestar Galactica.
I moved back home the very same week when the shooting of Battlestar Galactica’s fourth and final season came to an end, in the summer 2008. I learned about the final shootings coming to an end and about the wrap up party just a couple of days before I moved away from the beloved city of Tampere where I had lived and studied for almost nine years. It seemed as if two things in my life had come to and end: the life in which I got the chance to study all these wonderful subjects, to spent happy years in the beautiful city of Tampere and most of all to grow up as an adult. The other thing was ”my beloved Battlestar Galactica”. A series which I have become a fan of and which I’ll be a fan of for the rest of my life. For the person who’s reading this and who has no idea what I’m talking about: I’m looking at the series through the eyes of a person who’s been educated to analyze texts and to see structures in different kinds of texts and also in audiovisual “texts”, meaning different kinds of visual media. I am also very interested in looking at different kinds of texts this way – whether written or audiovisual. And I see a hell of an achievement in BSG, especially in the way it has been written.
BSG gave me the faith to manage my first assignment as a producer and it has given the most important idea behind the series: faith manages. The producers and the whole crew of BSG had a vision and they brought it to life. They simply had faith to the issue at hand: to do their job the best they can. A job well done will reward anyone involved. And I’m not talking just about money but about life itself.
At the moment I’m ”walking through my own trip down the magic stream (the name of this blog): I have no idea what’s a head for me – since I moved back to Savonlinna every day has been an adventure. It’s been one hell of a ride and I wouldn’t change a day – at least life is not boring 😉 So I’m just gonna float down this magic stream for now trying to have faith for the things to come. And do my job the best I can.
There is also the aspect of the literary critic. What does all this have to with literary criticism?
1) Science fictions deals – among other issues – with issues of power and 2) it is about issues of power: making of science fiction (books, films, tv-shows etc.) is a constant struggle within the existing power structures and norms of the society. Scifi’s whole history has been one big struggle against these stuctures and norms but this has begun to change, and the way I see it, BSG has been in the heart of this change during the past few years. Also the issues scifi genre has been dealing with has managed to change the perspective for many people, and once again specifically BSG has been in the heart of this change through the issues it has brought up on the screen/tv. In the past scifi was mostly dealing with issues like man versus machine or society versus machine. During the past 10 years the genre, especially tv scifi, has clearly developed and moved to the psychological and moral areas of life. The genre has gained depth and clearly become much more complex than it has been. In literature this change began earlier and it has been very logical and ongoing till today. Scifi is no longer just about man versus machine or about a society versus machines, it’s much more. It’s about us, who we are and where we come from.
3) Literary criticism is – among other issues like the texts at hand – about power: critics use their power when they are writing criticisms. The power of the critic is subjective but power all the same. As critic I have been pondering about this quite a lot. I’m not so well known critic that my thougts (or the criticism’s I’ve written for that matter) would have any meaning for the general public, but I’m pondering about these issues anyway. And it is very interesting how they relate to scifi genre. As Michel Foucault put it: power is a structure and it is also a structure which sustains itself. And if the norm is that ”scifi is something rediculous and goofy”, the power structures will normally and generally follow along trail of thought. But a literary critic can also follow this trail of thought and maybe try to change it, bit by bit. Maybe someday. 😉 I think all this is very interesting.
The connection of literature scifi and the scifi in tv/screen has always been strong. Many books have been made into films and many films have been made into books, also many tv-series like Star Trek. One can observe the genre through narratives both in tv/movies and in literature and see a visible change in the themes. One can also see a visible change in the narratives, in the way the stories are built and told. So I’m a literary critic who studies and analyzes texts and narratives. And who’s a science fiction fan. And when I saw BSG I was totally floored, blown away by the depth of this series.
The series changed me as a person – during different seasons one could actually visibly observe the change in the genre that happening before our very eyes: the complexity of the issues the series dealt with, they way it was shot and edited, and the way it’s music was done. When I saw and realized the enormous amount of effort the whole crew was putting into the making of the series, it just blew me away. I’ve been a science fiction and fantasy literature fan all my life. But I never actually ”came out” publicly until I saw Battlestar. So I came out and announced that I’m a scifi-fan. This might not sound much but all the fans and especially “the makers of scifi” (= people who’re actually working with scifi for a living) know that it’s big deal. That for many people scifi is like cancer and you just want to avoid seeing and hearing it because it might be contagious. Somebody once told me that ”saying you’re a scifi fan is the same thing as taking the safety of from your gun”. Yes, I’ve noticed. But despite that my car has a bumber sticker which says ”My other ride is a battlestar”. Couldn’t help myself. And yes – I’m sure that this is the only bumber sticker in Finland. Hee!
As I said above, scifi is about who we are and where we come from. This is the way I see it and feel about it. So what I’m doing is that I’m trying to reason with these issues while talking about books, texts and narratives in general. From time to time I’ve tried to make sense about science fiction to the readers of this blog. (Yeah, I’ve actually got readers. Statistics tell me so.) I work my way through different children’s books, also including fantasy books, and among the other observations I make about the texts I try to explain ”the scifi or the fantasy” about these books. Don’t know if I’m doing good work or not but we’ve had some actual conversations here. Which is something we Finns are not always so good at. The so called conversations tend to flame up and people start accusing each other for being extremists etc. And duly noted – scifi IS a sensitive issue. So it doesn’t make the conversations any easier. Even if it’s about children’s books scifi. The pressure on fantasy literature has been easing up bit by bit over the years, which is probably due to the Potter’s, but scifi isn’t ”normal” issue yet. But we’re getting there slowly. There are also other issues why BSG has been an important factor in my life but I will not into those now (issues like for example the complexity of the series or the issues dealt within the series, the way it represents society, norms and other major issues like religion. But these are way too complex issues to go into right here and now).
So this is my blog and I’m writing it in Finnish. I was considering about writing in English too but it’s kind of pointless since most of the books I write about are in Finnish by Finnish writers. Of course I could always write some notions about the literary criticism etc. in English but frankly I don’t have the time or the energy.
